When the army of Cornwallis surrendered to Washington in 1781, the British military band is supposed to have played a tune called 'The World Turned Upside Down'. The Feast of the Visitation is all about worlds being turned upside down: Childless Hannah becomes the mother of many; childless Elizabeth the mother of John; Mary, the young woman under a cloud, gives birth to Jesus. Sometimes turning the world upside down is exactly what we need in order to gain a glimpse of the world as God intends it to be.
